The settlement structure in Orkanger center is very varied, but has clearly defined sub-areas. Two of these, Nerøra and the shopping street, will be discussed separately. The population wants Orkanger strengthened as a center for the municipality. In such processes, it is important to weigh between the individual developer and broad public interests, where these collide. Existing structures with good qualities, which the Nerøra or villa neighborhood at Orkla, should be preserved. It is advised not to open for large-scale densification in these areas.
Orkdanger Historielag made this comment as to how they envision the future of Orkanger;
”En kan tenke seg at Kåresgata ble brosteinbelagt med status som gågate og at det også ble ”tatt noen andre grep” så noen foretaksomme personer kunne finne det interessant å dra i gang noen små næringsvirksomheter. Kafeer, frisører, småbutikker og mye annet. For en turistattraksjon dette ville bli! Flere tettsteder og småbyer her i landet har tatt slike grep. Sjøgata i Mosjøen er et godt eksempel, og de har lykkes fordi de ville det. Er vi villige til å gjøre noe lignende i vår kommune”
It is my intention to explore the possibilities for further development of the town centre. Based on research and analysis I have formed a proposal which aims at revilatising the town centre and bring back the activites to Orkanger central.
The proposal aims at forming a new shopping street and market area with the aims of bringing back commercial and public activities to the town centre, the proposal is divided into two parts.
Firstly, redefining the urban thresholds along Orkdalsveien, with a vision of forming a more inviting atmosphere in and around Orkanger central. Secondly, addressing the old shops in the centre and the important aspect of keeping the historical image of the town.
